By the end of this unit, you will be able to:
Recognise and critique key research paradigms, approaches, designs and methods used in educational research
Identify appropriate topics for enquiry and formulate appropriate questions, aims and objectives
Be familiar with, and understand how to apply, a range of research approaches, designs and methods (of data collection and analysis) appropriate to investigating and/or addressing educational problems
Identify and develop strategies to address ethical considerations in research pertaining to educational settings, including the SDGs and issues pertaining to decolonisation |
Synopsis: | Critically engage with key paradigms, approaches, designs and methods used to conduct educational research.
You'll consider ethical and methodological issues and challenges in carrying out educational research and potential solutions, including engaging with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). You'll develop critical knowledge and practical and analytical skills, enabling you to design a small-scale educational research project of your choice. |
Content: | In this unit, the following topics will be engaged with:
The role and purposes of research in education
Identification of a problem to be studied and development of appropriate research questions, aims and objectives
The research design and process, including key research paradigms, approaches and designs, (including qualitative, quantitative and mixed/blended designs)
Design of appropriate research tools and methods for collecting/generating data
Analysis and interpretation of qualitative and quantitative data
The importance of drawing upon a range of research knowledges and practices from global researchers with diverse backgrounds and varied characteristics
Consideration of methodological issues, dilemmas and challenges in educational research and of potential solutions
Critical engagement with research ethics and integrity
Exploration of marginalised and/or localised perspectives in the academy and issues pertaining to decolonisation
Engagement with the SDGs |
