Understand the key tenets of socio-cultural theories of learning; explain key concepts and how they can be used to understand the process of learning
Through collaborative engagement with peers critically analyse and explain personal/professional learning experiences through a sociocultural lens
Utilise visual methodologies to analyse learning
Foster inclusive and interculturally sensitive practices to improve learning in international education |
Synopsis: | Study how interactions between learning and culture influence international education and explore sociocultural learning theories and cultural concepts.
You'll critically analyse yours and peers' personal-professional learning experiences and develop intercultural sensitivity. You'll advance your understanding of:

Content: | In this unit, the following topics will be engaged with:

Problematising learning using different cultural and social perspectives (including students' own), for example, Indigenous, European, Confucian, Islamic
What is culture? (SDG 4.7)
Exploring and critically analysing culture: theories and assumptions
How can sociocultural theories of learning illuminate learning in a contemporary, globalised world? (SDG 4.5, 4.7)
Introducing the key families of learning theories and the distinctiveness of sociocultural theories
Exploring socio-cultural theory and key concepts
How applicable are contemporary learning theories to diverse cultural contexts?
Critiquing contemporary research studies in culture and learning
How do the core learning concepts of intelligence, memory and motivation interplay with culture? (SDG4.5, 4.7)
Exploring beliefs, knowledges and assumptions associated with these three concepts
How can we use an understanding of the interconnections between learning and culture to transform learning for a globalised, rapidly changing world? (SDG 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 10.2, 16.7)
