- Critically appraise the relationship between globalisation and international education and how this is affected by issues of inequality, sustainability, social justice and by cultural context
- Construct coherent arguments about educational issues related to international education and globalisation, drawing on relevant conceptual and empirical evidence to support conclusions
- Recognise and critique key research methodologies, methods and ethical issues related to research in international education and globalisation |

Content: | In this unit, the following topics will be engaged with:
- Theories on the origins of globalisation and its influence on national and international educational contexts
- Convergences and divergences in state policy responses to globalisation
- The relationship between education policy and issues such as economic competitiveness, sustainability and social justice in different national contexts
- Local and global markets in education: their operation and regulation
- The influence of international agencies and organisations such as the World Bank, OECD, UNESCO, the EU and NGOs
- The knowledge economy and the emergence of mass higher education
- Global trends in assessment and examinations
- The theory and practice of 'adjectival' forms of education such as global citizenship education or education for sustainable development that are relevant within an international context
- Changing definitions of, and influences on, educational quality in the context of globalisation
- The expansion of, and impact of, international systems of education
- Mediation of global policy through its national and local implementation
- The influence of social media and other political forces on the development of educational policy within a context of globalisation |
