Having studied this unit, students will be able to:
* Understand the meaning of contemporary social theory as an analytical tool for qualitative social science research; * Begin to formulate their own theoretical approach to studying education to enhance their professional practice. |
Aims: | The aims of the unit are:
* to engage students in the critical examination of key contemporary social theory concepts; * to prepare students to conduct theoretically informed research in the social sciences, with a particular focus on education; * to link students' personal research interests with a theoretical analysis of education . |

Content: | In this unit, students will critically analyse contemporary education research that is informed by theoretical foundations in social theory. The unit will cover the following areas:
* Contemporary ways of thinking about and theorising key social theory concepts; * The socio-cultural contexts of education. |
