Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit, you will be able to: demonstrate critical knowledge and awareness of current theory of bilingualism, multilingualism and plurilingualism in educational contexts (SDG4) demonstrate critical understanding of the role of factors such as cognition, age, social and classroom context in the development of bilingualism and multilingualism (SDG10, SDG11) demonstrate critical understanding of issues relating to the development of biliteracy, multiliteracies and multimodal communication (SDG4) demonstrate critical understanding of the concepts and processes of code-switching and translanguaging critically reflect and comment on the role of bilingualism / multilingualism / plurilingualism in a specific educational context with a view to enhancing inclusion and equity for all learners (SDG4, SDG10, SDG11)


Synopsis: Familiarise yourself with current bilingual, multilingual and plurilingual practices in educational environments. This unit supports anybody who works, or aspires to work, with bilingual, multilingual or plurilingual learners. You will engage critically with contemporary debates relating to aspects of bilingual and multilingual communication, including biliteracy, code-switching and translanguaging.

Content: Theories of bilingual, multilingual and plurilingual language learning
Age and the development of bilingualism, multilingualism and plurilingualism
Bilingualism, multilingualism and cognition
Language attitudes, multilingualism and contemporary social issues as they apply to education (SDG4)
Language attrition and shift
Language socialisation, including issues of equality, diversity and inclusion (SDG10, SDG11)
Biliteracy, multiliteracies and multimodality
Code-switching, translanguaging and classroom discourse.
