| Synopsis: | Investigate the relationship between education and society, drawing on a range of social theories relevant to the sociology of education.
You will develop an understanding of key educational issues facing young people, teachers, and society, such as the impact of globalisation on education policy, the role of the state, social disadvantage, gender and feminism, and meritocracy.
You will be encouraged to explore these aspects in relation to your professional practice. |
| Content: | In this unit, students will engage with contemporary education research that is informed by foundations in social theory. The unit will cover the following areas:
Social theory that engages with or has relevance to educational issues and processes (SDG 4,5,8,10, 16);
Education, the state and globalisation (SDG 4, 8, 10, 16);
Education, disadvantage and social justice (SDG 4,5,10, 16);
Analysis of pedagogic contexts (SDG 4, 10);
Young people and social issues (SDG 8,10);
Teachers, educators and society (SDG 4, 16);
Gender, feminism and education (SDG 4,5, 10,16); Race and ethnicity in education (SDG 4,10,16);
Meritocracy and social mobility (SDG 4, 5, 8, 10, 16). |
