By the end of this unit, you will be able to:
Identify a range of purposes of educational assessment in light of key philosophies of education, including education for sustainability.
Critically discuss alignments and tensions that arise out of these multiple purposes of educational assessment.
Understand and analyse relationships between educational assessment and social equity.
Critically review contemporary research in the field of educational assessment.
Reflect upon the broader implications of educational assessment practices, including your own, for example in terms of sustainable development.
Apply technical, practical and ethical knowledge to the discussion of existing and/or imagined alternatives to dominant assessment practices. |
Synopsis: | Explore and review ideas and practices of educational assessment.
You will develop your awareness and understanding of different types of educational assessment, including their advantages and limitations and their theoretical underpinnings. You will be invited to critically reflect upon the implications of your own assessment practices in light of contemporary educational concerns such as inclusion, equity and sustainability. |
Content: | This unit engages students with the following topics:
Aims and purposes of educational assessment
Implications of global educational assessment trends for local contexts including issues of relevance, quality, creativity and innovation (SDGs 4.6 and 9.5)
Formative and summative assessment practices
Assessment of knowledge and assessment of skills
Fairness and equity in educational assessment including experiences of assessment by different groups and individuals, and in different contexts (SDGs 5.1, 10.7 and 10.2)
Selecting, reviewing, designing assessment tools
Alternative perspectives and practices
Analysis of empirical case studies linked to assessment issues |
