Learning Outcomes: Having successfully studied this unit, you should be able to: Demonstrate critical knowledge and understanding of the relationship between professional knowledge and practice. Recognise different educational paradigms and understand the importance of drawing upon a range of research knowledges and practices. Identify appropriate topics for educational inquiry or professional development projects and formulate coherent aims, objectives, and research questions. Create a proposal for an investigative educational research project, or research-informed professional development enterprise, that demonstrates awareness of data collection or creation methods; data analysis processes; ethical considerations; effects of researcher positionality; and project evaluation criteria. Critically reflect on your own design and discuss its implications in light of broader educational concerns for example: philosophies of learning; sustainability; or social justice.


Synopsis: Learn how to conduct and design ethical and coherent educational research through the creation of a research proposal or professional development project. You will develop skills critical to the advancement of educational research, policy, and practice in your own, and broader, contexts. The skills and knowledge you will gain will support your dissertation or final project.

Content: Introduction to educational research including settings and contexts Exploring marginalised and under-represented groups (SDGs 4, 10, 16) New developments in educational research (SDGs 4, 8, 10, 13) Identifying educational problems or phenomena for study (SDGs 3, 4, 8, 13, 16) Approaches to research: linking theory and methods Qualitative, quantitative, innovative and blended methodologies Analysing data and presenting research findings Writing a research or project proposal
