Learning Outcomes: At the end of the unit students should be able to:
  • analyse the roles of financial markets and financial intermediaries;
  • explain how the pricing of financial instruments takes place;
  • understand the link between financial markets, financial crises and economic policy.
  • Interpret the outcomes of monetary policy options
  • Work in a group and determine and justify a selected portfolio of assets.
  • Relate the theories of finance and monetary policy to contemporary issues.



Synopsis: Gain an understanding of the main concepts in finance and money including the importance of financial crises to the economy and financial system, the main financial markets including stock markets, money markets, bond markets and foreign exchange markets. You will also study financial derivatives and bank regulation. Through your studies and your coursework, you will explore the fundamentals of portfolio management from a theoretical and empirical background.

Content: This unit provides an introduction to the main concepts of finance and monetary economics. It includes an analysis of financial crises, financial decision making with risky assets; the importance of portfolio diversification; an introduction to the CAPM model and the uses of derivative products. The money aspects cover interest rate determination; overview of the operation of money markets and how money market instruments are priced; introduction to bond markets; the term structure of interest rates; central banking and monetary policy.
