Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit students will be able to:
  • Use their knowledge of theory to interpret problems in macroeconomic policy making
  • Understand, manipulate and use for policy analysis a series of dynamic macroeconomic models
  • Solve problems from the material taught in the lecturers and classes
  • Critically assess the policy implications of different macroeconomic models



Synopsis: Develop a deeper understanding of macroeconomic theory, using formal macroeconomic models to interpret policy problems and questions. You will learn about the main contributions of the leading schools of macroeconomic. Youll explore economic dynamics, such as growth and business cycles, while developing relevant equilibrium concepts and addressing important policy issues.

Content: Long-run growth models. These may include:
  • neoclassical growth
  • endogenous growth
Introduction to dynamic general equilibrium (DGE) models. These may include:
  • the overlapping generation model
  • the Ramsey model
Introduction to dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) models. These may include:
  • the Real business cycle model
  • the New Keynesian model
