Learning Outcomes:
  • Apply key microeconomic techniques to problems related to health and health care markets.
  • Apply/understand statistical and econometric techniques to problems related to health and health care.
  • Describe and evaluate key current policy issues related to health. Compare health policies.
  • Develop knowledge of the literature and be able to evaluate and present journal articles or working papers.
  • Discuss main trends in health care and identify solutions to problems.



Synopsis: "Apply microeconomic and econometrics theory to issues in health and healthcare. You will learn about health as an output, and explore the similarities and differences between health, healthcare and other economic goods. You will also develop your understanding of the measurements and determinants of health and health care, and how to evaluate government policies in this context."

Content: This unit covers issues related to the production of health, demand for health capital, and socio-economic disparities in health. It investigates the main elements of health care including physician agency and hospital structure. The final part of the course focuses on the role of government in designing health and healthcare policies.
