Learning Outcomes: â�¢Apply methods of small-scale enquiry â�¢Employ methods of quantitative and qualitative data analysis â�¢Critically appraise the quality and limitations of currently available evidence to identify need for further research â�¢Select qualitative or quantitative data collection and analysis methods,�¿appropriate for a specific research question â�¢Demonstrate the process of designing a research project in sports performance


Synopsis: Develop the skills necessary to conduct a small-scale research study in the sports performance context. You will consider basic designs, approaches and conduct of research in applied contexts. This experience will be used to propose an academic research project that will advance our knowledge of the sports performance environment.

Content: Small scale enquiry: Project management; data management; abiding by ethical guidelines; reporting and presentation of findings in a structured and coherent way.�¿ Quantitative data analysis: descriptive statistics; parametric and non-parametric tests e.g. t-Test, correlation, chi-squared. Qualitative data analysis: Coding and organising data; approaches to analysing qualitative data e.g. thematic analysis, narrative analysis. Reviewing literature: Consideration and critique of types of quantitative and qualitative research;�¿how to conduct a literature review. Planning a research project: Formulating a question, developing hypotheses, selecting a suitable and realistic method, ethical issues, sampling, data collection, measurement. Judgement criteria: Validity; reliability; objectivity; qualitative approaches to trustworthiness; consideration of suitable judgement criteria in study design.
