[Page last updated: 03 June 2024]

Academic Year: 2024/25
Owning Department/School: Department for Health
Credits: 7.5 [equivalent to 15 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 150
Level: Honours (FHEQ level 6)
Period:
Semester 2
Assessment Summary: CWRI 100%
Assessment Detail:
  • Report (CWRI 100%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: Before taking this module you must take HL10521 AND take HL10522 AND take HL10525 AND take HL20535
Learning Outcomes:
  1. Discuss how experience of physical sensation plays a role in broader health behaviours
  2. Critically evaluate, interrogate, and defend relevant theoretical models, including extended mind and brain centric positions
  3. Apply both functionalist and phenomenological approaches to interpreting bodily experiences
  4. Appraise how the study of 'extreme' bodily experiences can influence our understanding of normal bodily experiences
  5. Explain both proprioceptive and interoceptive mechanisms of bodily experience, and how they interact with biological, psychological and sociocultural domains
  6. Translate relevant theoretical frameworks into the critique and development of embodied methods and intervention in the real world.

Aims: To provide students with an in-depth, applied knowledge of the biology, psychology and sociology of bodily experience.

Content: Ten physical sensory systems are explored, from balance to pain. Each sense is explored from a consideration of its function, how it is experienced, and how it defines limits of behaviour. Normal and abnormal experiences will be investigated. How the individual senses are integrated will be explored, gaining an embodied understanding of how we experience our bodies, and experience with our bodies.
We will discuss each sense in relation to the underlying biology, psychology and sociology, grounded in different theoretical models. This knowledge will be extended to explore how we develop novel methodologies and treatment interventions for persistent bodily sensations.
