Learning Outcomes:
  1. Identify and investigate contemporary problems in sport, exercise and health science research.
  2. Critically appraise research methods and techniques employed in contemporary sport, exercise and health science research.
  3. Appraise the advantages and limitations of interdisciplinary approaches in tackling problems in sport, exercise and health science research.
  4. Synthesise and evaluate scientific literature from contemporary research studies to formulate new scientific interpretations.
  5. Construct coherent and considered discussion and arguments regarding the theoretical foundation and practical application of contemporary research findings in the real world.
  6. Design, develop and disseminate findings from interdisciplinary research to fellow scientists.



Aims: To heighten awareness and nurture interest in a range of contemporary interdisciplinary topics in sport, exercise and health research. The unit will employ a variety of applied, student-led approaches that foster enquiry and deepen knowledge in specific interdisciplinary study topics.

Content: In this unit, students will identify, investigate and evaluate contemporary and interdisciplinary problems in sport, exercise and health science research via a range of applied, student-led teaching and learning approaches. This will include a number of cycles of enquiry-based learning spanning core disciplines (e.g. biomechanics, physiology, psychology and/or social science and public health) and with a focus on 'Prevention' (e.g. cancer, injury, tobacco and alcohol addiction) and 'Rehabilitation and Management' (e.g. behaviour change, obesity and sports performance) and concluding with a student conference.
