Learning Outcomes:
  1. Discuss the psychological theories and research pertaining to elite performance in competitive sport
  2. Assess the individual needs of an athlete and generate recommendations for particular psychological strategies to address challenges/issues in their sport
  3. Produce coherent arguments for using an evidence-based approach to sport psychology practice
  4. Appraise and challenge assumptions on the contribution that psychological concepts make to elite performance.



Aims: To provide students with an in-depth knowledge and critical comprehension of the psychological preparation of elite sports performers.

Content: Introduction to professional practice; stress and anxiety; appraisals and coping; self-confidence; focus and attention; psychological skills training (e.g., imagery, relaxation, self-talk etc); applied sport psychology case studies.
