Learning Outcomes: Analyse the physiological, biomechanical and functional limitations associated with a range of physical disabilities.
Describe and evaluate the role of exercise interventions for acute rehabilitation following catastrophic injury.
Discuss and apply the Paralympic sport classification system to disability, sport and exercise.
Discuss relevant real-world problems and generate evidence-based solutions.
Evaluate the role of long-term physical activity in the prevention of chronic disease and maintenance of health and wellbeing among populations with a range of physical disabilities.
Systematically and creatively conduct a range of physiological and mechanical assessments on humans performing exercise tests relevant to persons with disabilities.


Aims: To take an interdisciplinary approach to examine, critically appraise and synthesise evidence related to the influence of a range of human physical disabilities on functional limitations to sport and exercise. To examine the role of various forms of exercise/physical activity on chronic disease prevention and the maintenance of health and wellbeing in people with physical disabilities.

Learning outcomes: 1. Discuss and apply the Paralympic sport classification system to disability, sport and exercise. 2. Analyse the physiological, biomechanical and functional limitations associated with a range of physical disabilities. 3. Describe and evaluate the role of exercise interventions for acute rehabilitation following catastrophic injury. 4. Evaluate the role of long-term physical activity in the prevention of chronic disease and maintenance of health and wellbeing among populations with a range of physical disabilities. 5. Discuss relevant real-world problems and generate evidence-based solutions. 6. Systematically and creatively conduct a range of physiological and mechanical assessments on humans performing exercise tests relevant to persons with disabilities. 7. Perform physiological assessments on a Paralympic athlete and provide feedback to the client.

Content: This interdisciplinary unit will explore the impact of a range of human physical disabilities on sports performance, functional capacity, health and wellbeing. Students will critically evaluate the physiological, biomechanical and psychological limitations experienced by people with physical disabilities before considering the potential benefits of a range of assistive/healthcare technologies and exercise-based rehabilitation practices to enhance functional performance.
