Requisites: Before taking this module you must ( take MA12003 AND take MA12004 ) OR ( take MA12011 AND take MA12008 ) OR take MA12013
Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit, you will be able to:
  • Identify and formulate machine-learning problems from practical situations and judge the suitability of different machine learning approaches.
  • Write code to implement basic machine learning algorithms in Python.
  • Understand the mathematics¿underlying these techniques.

Synopsis: You will learn a range of machine learning techniques and algorithms for supervised and unsupervised learning. The unit will use Python to experiment with data sets.

Content: Machine learning algorithms and theory, including: general machine learning concepts: formulation of machine learning problems, model selection, cross-validation, overfitting, information retrieval and ranking. unsupervised learning: general idea of clustering, the K-means algorithm. Supervised learning: general idea of classification, simple approximate models such as linear model, loss functions, least squares and logistic regression, optimisation concepts and algorithms such as gradient descent, stochastic gradient descent, support vector machines.
