Requisites:
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
  • Plan and deliver a research project, both individually and as part of a team.
  • Engage in the process of research, setting short-term and long-term research goals, and working towards a specific research outcome.
  • Anticipate difficulties in a research plan and flexibly reassess research goals in the light of further understanding.
  • Demonstrate academic writing skills (including referencing and the appropriate use of graphs, diagrams and tables), code development or literature research skills, as appropriate to the research topic.
  • Summarise research findings for general or specialist audiences in oral presentations.

Synopsis: The aim of this unit is to train students in assessing the suitability of mathematical methods and computational techniques for a particular application; identifying research gaps in current methodology; and planning a substantial research project.

Content: Students will undertake intensive research projects in Statistical Applied Mathematics both individually and as part of a small team. The projects will be co-designed and agreed by the students, topic supervisors, and unit convenor and will be linked with an industrial partner where appropriate. Students will be expected to assemble a supervisory team for the individual component and will be assigned to a team for the group component.
