Learning Outcomes: - Discuss the demand and supply forces underlying the provision of company financial information according to international financial reporting standards and evaluate the usefulness of published sources of financial information. - Carry out financial statement analysis and evaluate its usefulness. - Discuss the accounting information needs of managers and the use of budgeting within an organisation. - Identify relevant information for internal decision-making and prepare basic budgets. - Understand the principles of working capital management and discuss the relative merits of various financing structures. - Appreciate the international context in which businesses are operating. - Improve technical, analytical and information research skills.


Synopsis: "- Explains how financial information generated within the accounting systems of organisations can be used to inform decision making within the organisation. - Understand financial statements and their place in decision-making. - Explore basic techniques of financial statement analysis. - Understand the various roles that accounting information plays within organisations. - Identify relevant information for decision-making purposes."

Content: Introduction and the concept of the Going Concern The role of profit and the statement of cash flows Financial statement analysis Relevant costs and decision making Short-term planning - the operating budget The control budget and variance analysis Financing the business and the cost of capital Investment appraisal and the capital budget

Course availability:

MN20812 is a Generally Available Unit which is available to all students of the University (subject to the usual constraints) to take either as a Director of Studies approved option within their programme of study or as an 'extra' unit which does not count towards a final award.
