By the end of the Unit, you will be able to:

Synopsis: | Explore French history, politics, society and culture with a particular focus on key events from the Revolution of 1789 to the events of May '68. You will study a range of French cultural activities, examining different genres (plays, novels, paintings and audio-visual documents). You will apply your knowledge of key elements in French history to understanding contemporary aspects of French politics and society. You will evaluate how cultural artefacts and political issues articulate the period. |
Content: | The Unit examines revolution and counter-revolution between 1789 and 1968 in France and the French-speaking world, drawing on specific historical events as well as literary and cultural artefacts to illustrate the ongoing contestations which have shaped the country and its interactions with others. |
