Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to, on completion of this unit:
  • Critically appraise international security and how this impacts the societies that experience it.
  • Critically discuss the cultural and institutional aspects of international security.
  • Develop a deeper appreciation of the scope, character and limits of 'critical' approaches to the examination of real-world questions.
  • Gain a critical understanding of the political processes through which international security issues are identified and responded to.
  • Develop a deeper appreciation of state level and international strategies to address both long-standing and more emergent international security challenges.



Synopsis: Familiarise yourself with the field of international security. Through theoretical and empirical explorations, you'll develop strong analytical skills to critically assess the scope, practice and politics of international security. You'll learn how to develop new perspectives, arguments and policy suggestions. As part of this unit, you'll also gain a deeper understanding of contemporary international security challenges.

Content: The Unit first introduces core theoretical debates associated with international security. With particular emphasis on various critical traditions within the field. After this the Unit will focus on the application of these theoretical tenets to contemporary cases such as conflicts, proliferation challenges and public health and environmental security.
