- that you have a comprehensive understanding of the role of the editor/reviser in the process of generating a document for a particular client or end-user, from liaising with the original author through to publication
|
Synopsis: | In this unit, you'll encounter a variety of text types and editing challenges, making use of authentic real-world materials with the aim of equipping you with practical solutions and strategies.
Seminars will focus on editing and revision tasks, completed as homework in addition to sight editing exercises, and will include individual and group tasks. You'll also complete assessed assignments throughout the year, on which you will receive detailed and constructive feedback.
|
Content: | You will learn the core skills and techniques involved in editing English language texts, including the principles of clear writing. After practising editing shorter texts, and a formative assessment on which you will receive detailed feedback, you will move on to more complex and sophisticated materials. These will be genuine documents, for the most part provided by the language services of international organisations.
There will be an emphasis on editing English texts produced by non-native speakers, and on working with texts that will later be translated into other languages.
In addition to language matters, the course will cover how to address content-related issues of the kind you are likely to encounter in professional work. It will also explore different degrees of editing, and tailoring texts to their intended readers.
In the Revision section of the syllabus, you will gain confidence in revising translations by your fellow students as well as translations produced externally.
After submitting an initial formative editing assessment, on which you will receive individual feedback, you will complete five assessed editing and revision assignments throughout the year and an examination at the end of the unit.
