Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, you will be able to:
  • demonstrate a critical understanding of key theoretical concepts such as 'racism', 'populism', 'far right', 'fascism', 'anti-fascism'
  • critically apply core theories and concepts to practical cases to understand the resurgence of reactionary politics in various settings
  • critically evaluate the support of such politics and their origins
  • understand resistance to such politics in various settings
  • develop an in-depth knowledge of case studies of your choice



Synopsis: Develop a critical understanding of the resurgence of reactionary movements and ideas and explore some of the most significant and controversial developments in contemporary politics. You'll engage with cutting-edge theoretical, conceptual and empirical research to grasp key concepts such as populism and racism. You'll explore contemporary case studies through independent research to develop a more practical understanding of the impact of such concepts on contemporary politics and democracy.

Content: The unit will discuss topics such as key concepts and theories in relation to reactionary politics and its resurgence in recent times. In particular, processes of oppression will be clearly outlined to ensure that their application can be made to various settings and across different case studies. Topics will range from racism to populism, to support and resistance to reactionary politics and movements.
