Learning Outcomes: On completion of the Unit students shall be able to:
  • Identify and describe cultural universals and variables [knowledge and understanding; transferable skills]
  • Compare and evaluate cultural artefacts across cultures [knowledge and understanding; transferable skills]
  • Prepare a cross-cultural comparative report [knowledge and understanding; transferable skills]
  • All of the above develop oral and written communication skills.



Synopsis: Prepare for your time abroad with an overview of theory and practice in intercultural awareness. You'll develop your skills in research methods to help you with assessment tasks in your time abroad. Working individually and in teams, you'll apply theories of intercultural communication to analyse and interpret cultural artefacts. You'll reflect on your own experience and understanding to explore and evaluate different cultures within a business context.

Framing debates -Culture, communication, context, and power -Conceptualising intercultural (communicative) competence and intercultural citizenship -Cultural identity, representation, and othering -The intercultural speaker and the acquisition of intercultural/global competence -International business culture(s) Research methods and national culture National culture(s)
