Synopsis: | Learn the skills and techniques you will need to embark on a career as a professional translator.
You'll encounter a variety of translation problems in class, working both individually and in groups to find appropriate solutions and drawing on authentic real-world materials.
You'll also complete assessed translations throughout the year focusing on different text types, on which you will receive detailed and constructive feedback. |
Content: | The unit will cover a variety of text types and translation problems making use of authentic real-world materials with the aim of equipping you with relevant practical solutions and strategies.
To prepare you for the professional translation industry, you will be required to respond to client briefs, to make use of appropriate style guides and to submit assessed work to a specified deadline.
Seminars will focus on translations completed as homework in addition to sight translation exercises and will include individual and group tasks.
You will be able to submit a mock translation assignment at the beginning of the unit to receive formative feedback on your technique and you will complete six assessed translations throughout the year. To simulate different real-world scenarios, four assignments will be take-home translations to be completed within three days, while one will have a 24-hour deadline, and a final assignment will be completed in exam conditions.
