[Page last updated: 03 June 2024]

Academic Year: 2024/25
Owning Department/School: Department of Life Sciences
Credits: 5 [equivalent to 10 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 100
Level: Intermediate (FHEQ level 5)
Period:
Semester 2
Assessment Summary: EXOB 100%
Assessment Detail:
  • Open-book written examination (EXOB 100%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites:
Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, you will be able to: Explain the role of genetics, epigenetics and hormones in the regulation and coordination of plant growth, development and inter/intracellular signalling. Explain how plants monitor their environment, and describe the cellular, molecular and signalling processes involved in response to a range of environmental conditions. Describe and discuss biotechnological techniques and processes to manipulate genetic and epigenetic factors, or signal transduction pathways, to create improved crop plants.

Synopsis: You will develop an understanding of genetic and epigenetic factors regulating plant growth and development. You will explore the diverse signalling molecules and their transduction pathways that control these processes.

Content: The unit will explore the following topics: plant signalling cascades, plant - microbial interactions, hormones in development and environmental interactions, epigenetic gene regulation, the plant's response to the abiotic environment, biotechnological approaches to support plant growth under stress conditions.
