Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit, students should be able to:

Demonstrate advanced scientific techniques appropriate to the chosen project.

Work with minimal supervision and guidance.

Work safely in a manner commensurate with current legislation.

Record experimental observations and data in an efficient manner.

Demonstrate the ability to conduct and develop a research programme.

Critically analyse and evaluate results in the context of other researchers' work.

Prepare an extended scientific report commensurate with a chosen journal style, with the potential for publication.

Discuss and defend the conclusions drawn from the study in an viva voce examination.


Synopsis: You will experience planning and undertaking an in-depth, full-time research project in drug discovery science. You will use your skills to analyse and interpret findings and report the outcomes of such investigations.

Content: A research topic will be selected in conjunction with a supervising member of staff and a programme of work planned.

The content will be project specific, but will entail advanced research methodology in either medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, microbiology, or medicines design and development.
