Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, students will be able to:
* Explain the historical emergence and changing conceptions of �race� and racism.
* Analyse how �race� is implicated in contemporary political debates and social problems.
* Evaluate competing accounts of how to challenge racism and racial inequality.


Synopsis: "Explore sociological accounts of race, ethnicity, racism and anti-racism. You will develop an understanding of the changing landscape of historical and contemporary ideas about `race and patterns of racism across national and global contexts. You will also learn about the challenges and opportunities for effective anti-racist practice and advocacy."

Content: This unit offers an introduction to sociological accounts of 'race', ethnicity, racism and anti-racism. The unit examines the changing landscape of historical and contemporary ideas about `race�¿ and patterns of racism across national and global contexts. The unit will then consider the role of `race�¿ in policy debates and different institutional contexts, as well as opportunities for effective strategies for anti-racist practice and advocacy.
