This Department of Social & Policy Sciences research theme focuses on how global and local health issues intersect with planetary challenges, emphasising a holistic approach to wellbeing and sustainability.

Our researchers covering this theme are divided into three broad areas.

Health, power and knowledge

We examine health, wellbeing, and disability within the context of power relations, social structures, and gender dynamics, also as mediated by different forms of knowledge, expertise, and technology.

This area centres on social practices related to human loss, death, dying, and the aftermath of death, including bereavement and post-mortem rituals, such as funerals.
