Our research is focused on developing a multifaceted understanding of social marginalisation and vulnerability, and the structures that perpetuate inequality.

Research in this area focuses on poverty, inequality and exclusion; migration, trafficking and exploitation; and public policies and social care.

This Department of Social & Policy Sciences research theme is concerned with social marginalisation and vulnerability. Research in this area covers the study of structures that perpetuate inequality and strategies for empowerment through policy and social intervention.

Our researchers covering this theme are divided into three broad areas.

Poverty, inequality and exclusion

We examine the power structures that drive inequality, poverty and social exclusion, and the mechanisms involved in combating these issues.

Migration, trafficking and exploitation

We study the vulnerabilities of marginalised groups to exploitation, trafficking, slavery, and the challenges of migration.

Public policies and social care

We evaluate major policy interventions seeking to address vulnerabilities and enhance social welfare, with a focus on the labour market, education, social care, family, and children-oriented policies.
