Since being established in December 2019, the Staff Wellbeing Champion Network is made up of over 50 volunteers from across the University who play a vital role in helping us achieve our staff wellbeing and community aspirations. The Champions are an ear to the ground, listening to people and providing leadership with crucial insight into the realities of employee wellbeing and inclusion. They are instrumental in promoting and supporting wellbeing, engagement, and an inclusive culture, by raising awareness around a variety of activities and events and signposting staff to resources and support services.

These initiatives have been instrumental in building trust, demonstrating compassion, and actively promoting a healthy community culture.

Their key achievements includes:

  • Creating inclusive connection opportunities to engage all employees.
  • Raising awareness of wellbeing activities and initiatives.
  • Challenging the stigma around mental health.
  • Collaborating and sharing best practice and stories of success.
  • Listening to and signposting colleagues to support.
  • Sharing wellbeing resources and keep wellbeing top of mind within teams.
  • Building trust and demonstrating compassion.
  • Actively role modelling and promoting a healthy culture within our community.
  • Initiating and leading special interest groups and networks, examples of these include:
    • Menopause Matters Support Group which has provided a supportive space for over a thousand female staff.
    • The Men’s Network, which has facilitated crucial health interventions.
    • No Kidding network offers support for those childless not by choice.
    • Loss and Grief Network provides a forum for sharing experiences of loss.

Winner: Amy Jeffries

Registry Systems Officer, Academic Registry

Amy has made significant achievements in her role. She is proactive and problem-solving, particularly in creating the SharePoint site, for easy information access, demonstrates her invaluable contributions. Amy actively supports colleagues facing challenges with the Curriculum Planner, demonstrating a brilliant collaborative approach. Her ability to build trust and confidence in the project and system is commendable. Amy’s willingness to go above and beyond to support stakeholders, especially academics during the early rollout of Curriculum Planner, has been impressive. Her proactive contributions to the Curriculum Management Project Team, including creating innovative training materials and streamlining information access, and providing practical solutions which greatly benefits users, make her an invaluable asset.

Additionally, Amy’s work extends beyond her role making an amazing impact supporting colleagues’ personal and professional development. As part of the Women’s Network: CGC, she single-handedly organized a successful ‘skills swaps’ series, inviting speakers to share knowledge on topics like process automation, marketing, and using tools like Canva and PowerBI. Amy’s proactive approach, including hosting activities and creating blogs and videos, has benefited more than 80 colleagues.

Enhancing the Student Experience

Winner: Grace Macmillan

Teaching Fellow, Skills Centre

Over the course of more than 30 years, Grace has demonstrated dedication, support, diligence, dependability, professionalism, creativity, flexibility, and generosity in their service at the University. Their unwavering commitment has been instrumental in supporting students in achieving academic, digital, and employability skills success.

Winner (Team): Dr Susanna Martin and Nathan Taylor

Experimental Officer and Specialist Research Technician, Department of Psychology

Susanna and Nathan have been nominated for their exceptional support and contributions within the department. They have played a pivotal role in setting up a complex virtual reality study, supported by CAMERA and the ESIF European grant, and have been key in developing various applications for teaching. They have been a constant source of support for students’ dissertation projects, solving many technical issues with software and hardware, for students’ dissertation projects always with a lovely attitude to problem solving and a smile. Their technical expertise ensured the flawless execution of a new virtual reality music application, greatly enhancing student experience and notably, they developed the VR environments that will be used at Southmead Hospital Bristol for research on virtual green spaces for NHS staff. Their proactive approach extends to assisting with software integration, resolving recruitment issues, coordinating with IT to fix software incompatibilities, and many students are exceptionally grateful for their professionalism, support and approachability. Their dedication has been invaluable to both the University and 6th form students, earning them widespread gratitude for their professionalism and approachability.

Assistant Locksmith, Campus Infrastructure

Simon has made a significant transition from the Chemistry department to Assistant Locksmith within Campus Infrastructure, where he has continued his commitment to staff wellbeing and mental health. Recognising the challenges of addressing these topics in the construction sector, Simon has innovatively introduced a wellbeing and mental health awareness noticeboard. This resource, visible to all carpenters, is regularly updated with valuable information and presented in an accessible manner. His discreet approach respects the sensitivities around such discussions in the industry. Simon’s initiative in establishing this noticeboard is unprecedented in Building Services and demonstrates his courage in tackling critical issues like suicide and depression, making him an invaluable and supportive figure in the team.

Alison Ryan (Faculty Research Strategy Implementation Manager) and Eirini Porfyraki (Research Centre Coordinator), Faculty of Engineering & Design

Alison and Eirini have significantly contributed to the Faculty by forming a new research support team, which has been central to the development and success of seven new research centres. Their leadership has been instrumental in aligning these centres with the Faculty’s research strategy, leading to a notable increase in research awards. They have effectively facilitated the growth of interdisciplinary initiatives, fostering research excellence and cultural evolution. Known for their collaborative nature and stakeholder-centric approach, Alison and Eirini have forged strong partnerships and received commendable feedback for their dedication and positive influence in the Faculty’s innovative research landscape.

Director of Employability and Student Success, Employability (Careers and Skills Centre)

In just over a year, Helen has made an immeasurable impact by driving strategic change and enhancing employability experiences for students at Bath University. She has been instrumental in implementing new practices and initiatives like Bath Insights and the Employability Strategy while chairing Progress and collaborating with the VCs office on postgraduate work. Helen’s efforts have unified various autonomous strands of employability into a cohesive vision of excellence.
