Course structure

This course lasts 1 year. It starts in September 2027 and ends in 2028. Welcome week starts on 27 September 2027.

Learning and assessment

Learning and teaching

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, independent learning and assessment activities. You will be expected to work on your own and as part of a group.

Contact hours

Class contact hours, which can be made up of lectures, seminars, and tutorials, vary throughout your course but are typically 10–16 hours a week during the taught semesters.

Additional briefing sessions will be provided to help you prepare for the summer project and as part of the co-curricular offering of live projects (see more below). You will receive direct guidance from an allocated member of academic staff for your summer project activity.

Independent learning

As well as timetabled contact hours, you're expected to undertake independent learning and assessment. Typically, this might be around 25 - 30 hours per week, and include individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework, presentations, or revising for exams.

Assessment breakdown

You will experience a broad balance between different forms of assessment: individual and group assignments, as well as examinations. The work required may include written submissions, live presentations and recorded videos. Assessment on the course has been designed to support your professional development in important business and practical skills.

The final degree grade is determined by a weighted average of the taught semesters (two thirds) and the summer project activity (one third).

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

This unit is intentionally different. It cuts across disciplinary boundaries with a focus on complex problems with no single right answer. Explore a broad range of issues in contemporary management and organisations and get the skills to provide compelling recommendations in debates, presentations and reports.

Analysing Grand Challenges in Business and Society cuts across disciplinary boundaries.   • Contracts of employment and consequent duties of employers and employees are considered in detail, including issues such as discrimination (racial, religious, sexual, disability and trade union rights) and health and safety at work.

Unit detail

This unit enables students to develop an understanding of an area of interest through a period of independent study. The topic may be chosen based on the student's academic interests, professional/practical expertise or future employability goals.
Students will be expected to identify key themes within an area of interest supported by at least ten articles from relevant literature, academic or otherwise, and to produce a meaningful analysis and/or synthesis of this body of work.
The exact content depends on the programme and topic of interest of the student, to be agreed on with the supervisor. However, the student will work with a supervisor that will guide the student to achieve a deeper understanding of the topic of choice.

Internship

Apply your academic knowledge in a real job with an internship at an organisation. You will develop your skills, learn about an industry and gain experience of a practical work environment. Strategic HRM in action focuses on the ways in which organisations plan, design, and implement HR strategies on the ground. It takes a scientist-practitioner focus by applying core knowledge of theory and concepts in a pragmatic and critically reflective manner. Students will explore current and future trends connected with strategic areas such as talent management, learning and development, and employee performance and engagement.
