Good academic study and communication skills are vital for your studies and are also skills valued by employers. The Skills Centre offers a range of personalised support.

Skills for Success tutorials

We offer 25-minute in-person 1:1 tutorials in the Skills Zone (6E 2.8) to help you with any academic skills you want to develop at any stage of your studies.

Tutors will give you constructive and practical suggestions, which will help you succeed in your coursework and assessments. Booking is required on MySkills.

Feedback by email

You can also request to receive feedback on a piece of writing by email.

The writing tutor will send you their feedback within three working days.

Advance booking is required on MySkills. Please upload a draft of your work when you book an appointment and provide details of the assignment, if applicable.

Self-access resources

You can access various online resources to develop your writing skills in your own time.

For example, a series of Lunchtime Learning resources aim to enhance your writing skills in just 15 minutes.

You can also find lots of practical guidance on academic writing on the Academic & Employability Skills blog.

Skills for Success sessions

We run a programme of 50-minute Skills for Success sessions each Semester, many of which focus on academic writing, for example:

  • Improve your academic style
  • Reader-friendly writing
  • Report writing under the microscope
