Right to study checks for international students

If you need immigration permission to study in the UK, you will need to have your immigration permission checked before you can register for your course.

Who needs to complete a right to study check

You will need to complete a right to study check if you are a national subject to immigration control or have a form of immigration permission and you are:

  • a new student
  • returning to the University after a period of suspense

You may need to complete a further check during your studies if you obtain a new visa or immigration permission.

Student visa holders

Travelling to the UK

Please do not travel to the UK before your Student visa has been granted or before the start date of your Student visa.

If you come to the UK before your Student visa has been granted, or you travel before the start date of your Student visa you will not be allowed to complete registration and start your course. You will need to leave the UK and come back once your Student visa has been approved.

You may not be allowed to start your course until you have a visa for the University of Bath. If you have a Student visa for another institution, you must apply to UKVI for a visa for the University of Bath before you can register.

If you applied for your Student visa from outside the UK

To complete your right to study check, you will be asked to upload the following to application tracker:

  • share code (or vignette if you cannot access your eVisa yet)
  • evidence of your travel to the UK

After you have provided the above documents, you will receive an email inviting you to register no earlier than one month before your course start date. After you receive the email inviting you to register, you can start the registration process online. However, you will not be fully registered until the day after you have travelled to the UK.

You do not need to contact us to let us know you have travelled to the UK. As long as you have provided evidence of your travel, we will update your student record automatically the day after you have travelled.

If you applied for your Student visa from inside the UK

If you have applied for your Student visa from inside the UK and are still waiting for a decision, you must provide us with the evidence of this application. To complete your right to study check, you will be asked to upload one of the following to application tracker:

  • a letter from UKVI confirming they have received your application
  • a letter from UKVI asking you to make an appointment to give your biometric data
  • a copy of your submitted Student visa application
  • the Document Checklist from the online visa application

After uploading one of the documents, we will update your student record and you will receive an email inviting you to register or confirming when registration is available.

All other types of immigration permission

If you do not have a Student visa, but require immigration permission to study in the UK, you will also need to complete the right to study check. To complete your right to study check, you will be asked to upload the following to application tracker:

  • share code (or vignette if you cannot access your eVisa yet)
  • passport

After you have provided the above documents, you will receive an email inviting you to register no earlier than one month before your course start date. After you receive the email inviting you to register, you can complete the registration process online.
