Each year the University presents a number of awards to members of staff in recognition of their outstanding contribution to teaching and learning.
2024
Doctoral Recognition Award
The Doctoral Recognition Awards, organised by the Doctoral College, recognise students and staff who have contributed to enhancing the doctoral student experience. This year, two members of the Department of Physics received Doctoral Recognition awards: Dr Nathan Roberts, a recent PhD graduate in the Department and Senior lecturer, Dr Carolin Villforth.
2023
Best Team Award in Support of Student Learning
Best Team in Support of Student Learning Award recognises exceptional or innovative teamwork in the delivery of learning and teaching and was awarded to The Bath Physics Observatory team (Dr Peter Sloan, Dr Vicky Scowcroft, Dr Steve Davies and Dr Gary Mathlin).
Curriculum Transformation Celebration Award
Curriculum Transformation Celebration Award for Institutional Leadership of this highly ambitious and demanding programme was awarded to Dr Fran Laughton.
2020
John Willis Award
This award recognises outstanding members of staff for their commitment to pastoral care, contribution to teaching and accomplishment in research and was awarded to Dr Stijn Wuyts in 2020.
2019
Vice-Chancellor's Engage Awards
The Vice-Chancellor's Engage Award is a celebration of public engagement and was awarded to Dr Fran Laughton in 2019 for setting up Communicating Physics Projects unit for final year students.
2018
Personal Tutor of the Year
Personal Tutor of the Year award recognises and celebrates staff who made significant and sustained contributions to students and the University and was awarded to Dr Paul Snow.
Innovation in Learning and Teaching Award
The Innovation in Learning and Teaching Award recognises a significant contribution to curriculum design, content or delivery innovation. In 2018, it was presented to Dr Peter Sloan.
2014
John Willis Award
This award recognises outstanding members of staff for their commitment to pastoral care, contribution to teaching and accomplishment in research and was awarded to Dr Peter Mosley in 2014.
2009
Mary Tasker Award
This award is presented to outstanding members of staff who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and was awarded to Dr Gary Mathlin in 2009.
Leadership in Learning & Teaching Award
This award recognises exceptional leadership in learning and teaching and was presented to Dr Fran Laughton in 2009.
2006
John Willis Award
This award recognises outstanding members of staff for their commitment to pastoral care, contribution to teaching and accomplishment in research and was awarded to Dr Nigel Wilding in 2006.
1997
John Willis Award
This award recognises outstanding members of staff for their commitment to pastoral care, contribution to teaching and accomplishment in research and was awarded to Dr Simon Crampin in 1997.

Mary Tasker Award
This award is presented to outstanding members of staff who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and was awarded to Dr Victor Humphreys in 1996.
