Introduction
This Statement outlines the commitment of the Department for Campus Infrastructure to promote, practice and deliver Sustainability at the University of Bath (UoB).
As a Department we shall seek to promote sustainability and environmental responsibility with the goal to reduce the environmental impact of our operations and assist others to do the same, while enhancing the well-being of students, staff, and the community
Scope
This statement applies to all activities, projects, and stakeholders within the Campus Infrastructure Department, including building maintenance, energy use, waste management, procurement, and transport logistics.
Objectives
- Reduce carbon emissions to support the University’s Net Zero targets.
- Minimize waste generation and increase recycling rates.
- Improve energy efficiency and promote the use of low or zero carbon plant or processes.
- Explore and implement all possible options for reducing energy and water consumption.
- Explore and implement all possible options for renewable energy or more sustainable power.
- Enhance sustainable procurement practices.
- Foster a culture of sustainability among staff, students, contractors and suppliers.

Campus Infrastructure areas of focus
Energy and Carbon Management
- Implement energy-efficient technologies in buildings, plant and infrastructure while transitioning to renewable energy sources or low carbon solutions where feasible.
- Regularly monitor and report on energy consumption and carbon emissions.
- Promote energy-saving practices among building users and develop policies to advise on the adoption of best practices.
Waste Management
- Utilise the UoB’s waste reduction, recycling, and composting programs.
- Promote and practice regular maintenance to maximize lifespan of plant and equipment.
- Minimise single-use plastics and encourage sustainable alternatives.
- Ensure safe and responsible disposal of hazardous materials and WEEE waste from projects and maintenance activities.
Water Conservation
- Install water-saving devices and promote efficient water use, including removing water coolers that use single use plastic bottles and promoting tap water or drinking fountains.
- Monitor water usage and address leaks promptly.
Sustainable Transport
- Encourage the use of public transport, cycling, walking, and car-sharing.
- Promote electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
- Reduce the environmental impact of the university’s fleet through sustainable vehicle choices.
Sustainable Procurement
- Source sustainable and ethically produced goods and services.
- Engage suppliers who demonstrate a commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
Roles and Responsibilities
Everyone has their part to play in sustainability. The Director of Campus Infrastructure is responsible for overseeing Campus Infrastructure and supporting the department in working to this statement.
Campus Infrastructure work closely with the Campus Sustainability team and together will explore and promote training, options and solutions and review progress regularly.
The Energy team within Campus Infrastructure are appointed to promote and monitor sustainable practices, ensure accurate metering & billing and provide information for annual energy and environment reports.
All staff and contractors are expected to comply with this statement and actively promote the UoB’s sustainability targets and agenda.
