Karen Turner Visiting Methodist Chaplain
Available for all students, supported by the Methodist church.
Role
Karen has been a part of the chaplaincy team for the last 8 years and has loved hosting Brew@2 and the charity soup lunch every Tuesday. She also looks after Chapel House, which is a Christian community house for students in Bath.
Karen is available on Tuesdays from 10.30am - 5.00pm.
Career
One of the most life-changing periods of Karen's life was when she left California to join an intentional Christian community in Suffolk in her early 20s. The experience of living in community with Orthodox, Catholic, Quaker and Anglican Christians from different parts of the world completely expanded her outlook and imagination, as well as her own identity as a believer.
That journey led her to work as an teacher and a youth worker, but what has remained has been a deep appreciation of seeing God at work in others and a love of the diversity of God’s family. The pilgrimage of a life walking with God hasn’t always been easy, but the new vistas and company on the way have been amazing.
Karen lives in Oldfield Park where she helps to enable a weekly community meal for students and enjoys working on initiatives with the Student Community Partnership. Because she’s also a part of the Bath Spa chaplaincy team she loves to see events that draw students from both universities together. She’s very happy to meet students for a coffee or a walk (with or without her dog)!
Karen is married to Philip and their most recent project is creating a new community cafe in Oldfield Park, called Bright Field.
Education
Karen has a degree in English and Spanish literature (Westmont, 1992) and Theology (Cambridge 1999) and a PGCE.
