Windows 11 Project

Upgrading Windows 10 devices to Windows 11 to ensure the University's laptops and PCs remain secure and fully supported

Project status

In progress

Duration

6 May 2024 to 31 Dec 2025

Project Overview

The Windows 11 Project is focused on upgrading all University of Bath-owned and managed Windows devices (including laptops and PCs) from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

From October 2025, Microsoft will end support for Windows 10. To ensure our devices remain supportable, receive the latest security updates and keep the University up to date with the latest operating systems, the University will upgrade to Windows 11.

We have approximately 8,500 University of Bath managed and owned devices (laptops, PCs, etc) that will be upgraded or replaced during 2024/2025. Whilst most devices can be upgraded, some will have specialist equipment attached or software installed that may not be Windows 11 compatible. Mitigation plans will be developed in collaboration with colleagues in these areas.

Preparing for the upgrade

The project team has been focused on analysis and planning work to prepare. More detailed information on the rollout plans will be communicated once the plans are finalised.

As part of this project, we aim to minimise the overall costs and impacts to the University.

The project team has identified several devices across campus that are either no longer in use or have reached the end of their life cycle. To prepare for the Windows 11 rollout, we will contact colleagues across the University to collect these unused or outdated devices for reuse or disposal.

If you know of any laptops or PCs that are no longer in use or that have potentially reached the end of their lifecycle and could be returned, or if you have any questions or concerns, contact the project team at windows-11@bath.ac.uk.
