Course structure

This course lasts 1 year. It starts in September 2024 and ends in 2025. Welcome week starts on 23 September 2024.

Learning and assessment

You’ll be taught and assessed by a variety of methods and it will vary between units. These methods are designed to promote in-depth learning and understanding of the subject.

Learning and teaching

Overall workload

We provide a flexible high-quality learning experience. You should expect to spend approximately 35 to 40 hours a week studying on your course. These hours consist of structured activities and independent learning.  

Contact hours

In most of the weeks, you can expect to spend between eight to 12 hours engaged in structured learning activities per week. Especially in the first two weeks, you can expect to spend about 20 hours each week, mostly associated with sessions associated with the delivery of the consulting skills.  

Timetabled sessions delivered in person on campus will be a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and laboratories. Other activities may include following a recorded lecture, or other learning materials, or joining a timetabled live interactive session. 

Independent learning

The remainder of your time outside these structured activities will be spent in independent learning which includes individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments, presentations, or revising for exams. You will be expected to work on your own and as part of a group.

Assessment breakdown

You will be assessed by a range of methods designed to develop and test your skills and knowledge. These include closed and open book examinations, essays, reports, presentations, and reflections. You will be assessed as an individual or as part of a group.

20 to 40% of your course will be assessed through examinations.

Approximately 20% will be assessed through practical work. 40 to 60% will be assessed through coursework.

In your third semester, you will be expected to complete an individual research project.

Professional accreditations

Since 2016, the MSc in Operations, Logistics and Supply Chain Management has been professionally accredited by CIPS and CILT.


Recognition of professional qualifications


As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practise a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practise your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

A strong Bachelor (Honours) degree when studied at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore Institute of Technology or Singapore University of Social Sciences with a final overall result of at least Second Class (Upper) Honours, or a strong Bachelor degree when studied at Singapore Management University (SMU) or Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). Typically, we require a final overall result of at least Second Class (Upper) Honours, 60% or B, however we ask that you upload a copy of the grading scale used by your institution, along with your transcript, when you submit your application due to the range of grading scales used by different institutions.

Extra costs

All School of Management MSc courses have a £60 application fee. Do not pay the fee until you have completed your application. You can pay the fee using the University’s online payment system.

If we offer you a place on a course, you will need to pay a £1,500 deposit to secure it.

Analysing grand challenges in business and society

This unit is intentionally different. It cuts across disciplinary boundaries with a focus on complex problems with no single right answer. Explore a broad range of issues in contemporary management and organisations and get the skills to provide compelling recommendations in debates, presentations and reports.

Analytical techniques for problem solving

5 credits

Develop analytical skills required to solve business and management problems. Work on techniques and software that can help you model problems, analyse data and propose solutions. Apply your skills on operations, logistics and supply chain management problems.

Consulting skills and project

15 credits

Acquire the methodological and applied skills you need to analyse operations, logistics and supply chains. You will have the opportunity to apply the concepts, techniques and skills acquired from your taught units to solving a practical business problem. You will also develop your qualitative and quantitative skills.

This unit spans the following periods of study:

Dissertation

30 credits

Research a topic in detail. You'll be able to focus on either an academic research question(s) or a practical challenge. Your analysis might be based on primary data, secondary data or a synthesis of existing literature. You’ll produce recommendations for theory and/or practice.

Governance for sustainability

5 credits

Learn about the structures, practices and frameworks that underpin corporate accountability and sustainability. Explore the tools and decision-making processes that firms rely on to promote social, environmental, and governance sustainability. Develop your ability to apply theoretical concepts to real corporate problems. The unit goes behind the headlines of corporate scandals so you can begin to understand how governance practices failed, and what can be done to improve practise.

Independent study

5 credits

Develop a deeper understanding of an area of interest through an independent study. You'll investigate at least ten academic articles and identify key themes within them. Supported by further reading, you'll produce an analysis and/or synthesis of the body of work. Entry to this unit is selective and you will need permission from your Director of Studies to do it.

Internship

30 credits

Apply your academic knowledge in a real job with a summer internship at an organisation. You'll develop your skills, learn about an industry and gain experience of a practical work environment.

Logistics and supply chain management
