Description: | Aims: 1. Developing an understanding of the principles underlying leadership in government, industry, and society. 2. Review of research on leadership and management, examining topics such as leadership skills, leading changes in organizations, leader-follower relationships, and leadership tactics. 3. Take the theoretical aspects of leadership and relate them to real situations. Learning Outcomes: On completion of this module, students should be able to: * Identify and critique leadership styles based on various theories discussed. * Understand the strengths and weaknesses of various leadership styles based on context. * Understand what makes a good leader. * Understand leader-follower relationships. * Identify dysfunctional organizations and propose strategies for change. Skills: At the end of this module, students should gain the following skills: A. Knowledge and Understanding * Students will be able to appreciate the complex nature of leadership research. (T,F,A) * Students will develop an understanding of the influence of contextual variables when studying leadership. Content: Content will include: * Leadership and Management - are they different? * Leadership as person, results, position and process * Contingency, situational and other early theories of leadership * Transactional and Transformational Leadership * Leadership as the management of meaning and emotion * Power and Influence * Leadership and followers; the leadership romance and follower expectations of leaders * Leaders as moral agents and the ethics of leadership * Servant leaders, distributed leadership and leaderful organizations * Dysfunctional and toxic leadership * Current Status of Leadership Research. |
