Learning Outcomes: | On completion of this unit students should be able to describe the generic features of a complex adaptive system. They will be able to model various types of complex system. They will be able to build system dynamics models from first principles. They will be able to build simple agent-based models. They will understand the property of 'emergence'. Students will have developed a deeper appreciation of the role and nature of firms in a complex economy. |
Aims: | This unit aims to provide students with the opportunity to engage critically with the proposition that an economy is a continuously evolving complex adaptive system. This perspective should encourage students to perceive of business problems in a dynamic context where the outcomes of applied business policies are difficult to predict a priori due to complex feedback processes involving other stakeholders. |
Skills: | The unit will nurture and develop the analytical and critical faculties of students. It will also develop conceptual modelling ability and abstract thinking. Computer simulation-model building (using open source software). |
