Credits: 5 [equivalent to 10 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 100
Level: Intermediate (FHEQ level 5)
Period:
Semester 2
Assessment Summary: CWRI 100%
Assessment Detail:
  • Report Individual (CWRI 100%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: Before taking this module you must take MA22016 OR take MA12029
Learning Outcomes:
* Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of mathematical ecology and epidemiology;
* Discuss and apply analytic, geometric and computational methods to study ordinary differential equation models for biological systems;
* Give a qualitative and quantitative account of the behaviour of ordinary differential equation models for biological systems;
* Interpret the mathematical analysis in terms of the original biological context.

Synopsis: In this unit you will explore the use of applied maths to understand biological systems. You will study how to formulate, analyse and interpret appropriate mathematical models to examine ecological and epidemiological processes and phenomena. You will develop an understanding of the underlying biological theory, as well as the mathematics. This unit will give you the chance to see the extensive application of mathematics in another scientific discipline.

Content: Modelling ecological and epidemiological dynamics with ordinary differential equations. Population dynamics of single species - basic reproductive ratio; Allee effects; harvesting; maximum sustainable yield; yield-effort curves; hysteresis. Population dynamics of interacting species - predator-prey models; functional responses; paradox of enrichment; competition models; principle of competitive exclusion. Infectious diseases - contact rates and paradigms; basic reproductive ratio; epidemic threshold theorems; final epidemic size; eradication and control. Parts of the content include using and adapting code for computational model analysis.
