By the end of the module students will be able to:
* Explain the nature and roles of accounting and finance; * Identify the main users of accounting and discuss their needs; * Explain the nature and purpose of the three major financial statements; * Prepare the Statement of Financial Position, the Income Statement and the Statement of Cashflows from relevant financial information; * Use ratios to analyse the financial performance and position of a business; * Understand the role of budgets and demonstrate how budgets are constructed and how they relate to the long term objectives of the organisation; * Identify, describe and use investment appraisal techniques; * Determine a firm's cost of capital; * Develop an understanding of the firm's capital structure by introducing the Modigliani & Miller model (with and without tax); * Investigate the issues involved in determining a firm's dividend policy. |
Synopsis: | Get an introduction to key accounting and finance concepts used in business. You will explore how to bring financial information to life in a variety of useful and interesting ways.
In the accounting part of the unit, You will learn how to create and analyse financial statements. In the finance part, You will investigate key concepts like:
- time value of money
- project analysis
- statement of financial position structure
- dividend disbursements
- valuation methodologies
