Young Adult Carers Undergraduate Bursary terms and conditions

The terms and conditions of the Young Adult Carer Bursary for undergraduate students from the UK who have caring responsibilities.


Terms And Conditions


This bursary is for undergraduate students from the UK who are young adult carers.

You are classed as a young adult carer if you are a carer under 25 who looks after a relative or friend, of any age, due to:

  • disability
  • chronic or terminal illness
  • mental health problems
  • alcohol or drug addiction/dependency

To be eligible, you must also:

  • be enrolled on a full-time undergraduate or foundation degree and registered as a student at the University of Bath
  • be aged 25 years or under at the start of the course
  • To receive the £500 bursary, students need to have a household income below £60,000, as assessed by The Student Loans Company.

Information on Providing Evidence as a Student with Caring Responsibilities. This should be in the form of an original letter by a professional person. The letter could be from:

  • Teacher/adviser from school/college
  • GP/ Health Professional
  • Social Worker/ Social services
  • Local authority
  • Charity or Support organisation, i.e. Carers Trust
  • The letter cannot be from a family member or the cared for person. The third-party professional will have known about the caring situation for a substantial amount of time and can verify that the student has caring responsibilities and for whom they care for.

We will also accept the following evidence:

  • Letter or medical report from a health professional such as a GP, detailing the medical condition of the person you care for.
  • A copy of your latest Carer’s Award letter if you receive Carer’s Allowance or a copy of an award letter showing that the person you care for is in receipt of one of the following:
    • Attendance Allowance
    • Council Tax Reduction or Housing Benefit that includes a disability premium as part of the assessment
    • Disability Living Allowance
    • Employment and Support Allowance
    • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

Evidence must be dated within the last 12 months.

  1. The Bursary is worth £500 per academic year of study. Bursaries for eligible students which are given in your placement year are for year-long unpaid or study abroad periods only. Students undertaking a paid placement will not be eligible for the Young Adult Carer Bursary.
  2. You cannot be considered for an award if you have not responded to our requests for and provided appropriate proof of your caring responsibilities.
  3. Awards cannot be claimed retrospectively for previous academic years.
  4. Awards will not normally be terminated nor repayment required on the basis of academic failure.
  5. Awards will be paid for one repeat year or part-year only. Students who have more than one year of repeat study, will need to evidence mitigating circumstances to be considered for additional support.
  6. The University reserves the right to terminate an award and demand repayment of funds already paid in the case of disciplinary action against an award-holder. Cases will be considered on an individual basis by the Director of Student Support.
  7. It is compulsory to meet with a member of the Student Retention & Success Team each Semester, every year including a placement year, if you are awarded a bursary. Failure to not engage with the Student Retention Success Team could result in the bursary being withdrawn.
  8. The University reserves the right to withdraw a Bursary from anyone who is found to have misled the University about any aspect of their eligibility and to seek repayment of any monies already paid by appropriate means.
  9. To demonstrate the impact of our service, we will ask you to participate in questionnaires and other evaluation tools during your time at University and after graduation. At the minimum, you will be required to complete the following:
    • a. Student Retention & Success Team End of Year Evaluation (yearly)
    • b. Student Retention & Success Team Graduate Destinations Survey
  10. The Bursary is paid in one instalment each academic year.
  11. Please note Student Support may pass on your details to other parties within the University to ensure you receive the appropriate support and advice, if you have any concerns about this please contact us to discuss further.
  12. Students cannot receive more than one Young Adult Carer, Estranged student, Refugee and Care Leaver Bursary. If you meet the eligibility criteria for more than one of these Bursaries then it will be at the discretion of the Student Retention & Success Team Leader which Bursary you receive.
  13. If you suspend your studies then you must notify studentsuccess@bath.ac.uk as soon as possible. The Student Retention & Success Team have the discretion to continue bursary payments while a student is in suspense. This will be decided on a case by case basis.
  14. If your situation or status changes during your studies, and this could affect your entitlement to the bursary, you must let the Student Retention & Success Team know as soon as possible via studentsuccess@bath.ac.uk.
